Our Dearest Friend Jan

On the afternoon of July 12, 2015, Jan Peccia died of cancer at St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena, Montana. She was surrounded by family and loved ones. Jan was 48 years old.

In 1997, Jan purchased The Montana Book and Toy Co. with her sister-in-law and best friend, Didi Augustine Peccia. The bookstore remains an anchor in downtown Helena for readers and writers of all levels and ages. Jan brought her warmth, her keen literary sense, and her commitment to the Helena community, to all facets of the business. With Didi she participated in a store book club, hosted readings by local and visiting authors, and co-sponsored many charitable events. She was an avid reader, and loved nothing more than matching a customer with a good book.

Jan embarked on a second business in 2005, when—again with sister-in-law Didi—she became a real estate broker and formed Augustine Properties which specializes in residential and commercial real estate. Augustine Properties was involved in the development of Nob Hill on the south side of Helena. Jan was perfectly suited for this new position. Just as she wanted to be sure Montana Book Company customers walked out of the store with the perfect book, she worked long hours to match real estate customers to the house of their dreams. She treated each listing as an honor and an adventure.

Jan was diagnosed with melanoma in October 2013. She endured a hard year of treatment, but never lost her positive attitude or her adventurous spirit, and barely let it slow down her busy life. She continued to play an active role in her family’s life, worked at both businesses, took yoga classes, participated in her book club, gardened and always had a warm smile ready for anyone she encountered. She was declared cancer free in December 2014, and celebrated with her family and dozens of friends. Unfortunately, the cancer returned suddenly in July 2015. She spent her final days with her children, family and friends, celebrating her life.
