Our Dearest Friend Jan

On the afternoon of July 12, 2015, Jan Peccia died of cancer at St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena, Montana. She was surrounded by family and loved ones. Jan was 48 years old.

In 1997, Jan purchased The Montana Book and Toy Co. with her sister-in-law and best friend, Didi Augustine Peccia. The bookstore remains an anchor in downtown Helena for readers and writers of all levels and ages. Jan brought her warmth, her keen literary sense, and her commitment to the Helena community, to all facets of the business. With Didi she participated in a store book club, hosted readings by local and visiting authors, and co-sponsored many charitable events. She was an avid reader, and loved nothing more than matching a customer with a good book.

Jan embarked on a second business in 2005, when—again with sister-in-law Didi—she became a real estate broker and formed Augustine Properties which specializes in residential and commercial real estate. Augustine Properties was involved in the development of Nob Hill on the south side of Helena. Jan was perfectly suited for this new position. Just as she wanted to be sure Montana Book Company customers walked out of the store with the perfect book, she worked long hours to match real estate customers to the house of their dreams. She treated each listing as an honor and an adventure.

Jan was diagnosed with melanoma in October 2013. She endured a hard year of treatment, but never lost her positive attitude or her adventurous spirit, and barely let it slow down her busy life. She continued to play an active role in her family’s life, worked at both businesses, took yoga classes, participated in her book club, gardened and always had a warm smile ready for anyone she encountered. She was declared cancer free in December 2014, and celebrated with her family and dozens of friends. Unfortunately, the cancer returned suddenly in July 2015. She spent her final days with her children, family and friends, celebrating her life.

The Books of Elsewhere The Books of Elsewhere, Vol. 1: The Shadows by Jacqueline West. Old Ms. McMartin is definitely dead. Now her crumbling Victorian mansion lies vacant. When eleven-year-old Olive and her dippy mathematician parents move in, she knows there’s something odd about the place—not least the walls covered in strange antique paintings. But when Olive finds a pair of old spectacles in a dusty drawer, she discovers the most peculiar thing yet: She can travel inside these paintings to a world that’s strangely quiet . . . and eerily like her own Yet Elsewhere harbors dark secrets—and Morton, an undersized boy with an outsize temper.

Theodore Kid Layer Theodore Boone: Kid Layer by John Grisham. In the small city of Strattenburg, there are many lawyers, and though he’s only thirteen years old, Theo Boone thinks he’s one of them. Theo knows every judge, policeman, court clerk—and a lot about the law. He dreams of being a great trial lawyer, of a life in the courtroom. But Theo finds himself in court much sooner than expected. Because he knows so much—maybe too much—he is suddenly dragged into the middle of a sensational murder trial. A cold-blooded killer is about to go free, and only Theo knows the truth. The stakes are high, but Theo won’t stop until justice is served.

Savvy Savvy by Ingrid Law. Thirteen is when a Beaumont’s savvy hits—and with one brother who causes hurricanes and another who creates electricity, Mibs Beaumont is eager to see what she gets. But just before the big day, Poppa is in a terrible accident. And now all Mibs wants is a savvy that will save him. In fact, Mibs is so sure she’ll get a powerful savvy that she sneaks a ride to the hospital on a rickety bus with her sibling and the preacher’s kids in tow. After this extraordinary adventure—full of talking tattoos and a kidnapping—not a soul on board will ever be the same.
